Group Leader Microbiology - Brussels

Function Group: R&D / Biology Team Lead


For a clinical-stage biotechnology company, we are looking for a Group Leader Microbiology. This company is a joint collaboration of the VIB and a world player in the microbiome field, which resulted in the development of a cutting-edge technology platform. Their mission is the development and production of live biotherapeutic products, to unlock the microbiome’s potential in combatting different disease indications. In this position, you will be responsible for streamlining and leading the increasing microbiological research activities within the company. This position is instrumental in ensuring success after the clinical development of their lead product.


In this position, you will be responsible to structure and streamline the current microbiology research activities within the company and to translate the new microbiome strategy into successful research projects. You will actively lead a group of Microbiologists, consisting of PhD and non-PhD Scientists, which is expected to grow further over time and will be coordinating multidisciplinary projects both with internal and external partners. A major objective will be the the design and development of methods to isolate, culture and characterise fastidious bacteria, optimise media and pilot batch fermentation of selected human gut microbiota and develop multi-strain consortia thereof. You will work directly with the CSO and the Translational Research Group Leader, together shaping and executing the multi-disciplinary discovery strategy.


You will bring the following skill set/experience:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in microbiology
  • Three to five years of industry experience in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Previous leadership/coordinating experience (internally and externally)
  • Expertise in microbial ecology, anaerobic culturing techniques, genotypic and phenotypic characterisation and metagenomic and metabolomic analyses
  • Hands-on experience in a range of molecular biology techniques, as well as handling BL-2 organisms
  • Strong communicator, organised and charismatic personality
