Function Group: R&D / Biology Senior Scientist

HORAMA, a French biotech company based in Paris and Nantes, is looking for a Project Leader / Senior Scientist Gene Therapy. The company specialises in gene therapy for the treatment of rare, inherited retinal diseases. Backed by a strong syndicate of investors HORAMA aims being one of the key players in the field of ophthalmic gene therapy. They were successful in bringing a candidate drug to the clinics, have a promising preclinical development program and continuously keep improving their technology platform.

HORAMA’s approach is based on vector technology using non-pathogenic, recombinant adeno-associated viruses (rAAV). The rAAV carrying the therapeutic gene of interest penetrates the target retinal cells, inducing the expression of the functional protein. This restores normal cell function, prevents further retinal deterioration, and improves or restores visual function.

To continue the development of their technology platform and the discovery of new preclinical candidate drugs, they are looking to hire a strong scientist that can bring projects further. In this position you will no longer be in the lab, but instead use your strong scientific skills to successfully coordinate different activities of multiple contributors. You will organise the workflow and outline the experiments necessary to the discovery process, liaise with academic and CRO partners, interpret the generated data and thus work towards the discovery of new preclinical drug candidates. You will report to the Director of Project Management. You will spearhead the further molecular research in the exciting field of gene therapy, making sure a solid pipeline will be in place for the future success for the company.

In order to be successful in this position, you bring the following skills / experience:

  • MSc or PhD in (Molecular) Biology, Biotechnology or equivalent
  • > 3 years experience research experience in an industrial setting
  • Strong hands-on discovery research in a gene-therapy context
  • Previous track record in independently organising scientific research and the ability to set priorities

Ideally, you also bring:

  • Strong understanding of the Neurology / CNS or Opthalmology disease areas
  • Previous project leaderships track record
  • Fluency in French

In this position, you will be able to develop yourself from a purely scientific oriented researcher into a researcher with a holistic view. You will be an essential part in driving the discovery inside the company, essential for the future pipeline and thus success for the company. You will be able to develop in a strong independent project leader, without losing your ties to the basic science. You will find yourself in a dynamic and ambitious company, where you can grow along with their success. You can expect a base yearly salary within the range of 50,000 – 80, 000 euros gross, supplemented with secondary benefits.
