Function Group: R&D / Biology Scientist

For Confo Therapeutics, a young and innovative drug discovery company, we are looking for a (Senior) Research Associate Molecular Engineering. Their novel approach to drug discovery is internationally recognised and is both quicker and more performant than standard approaches. Their focus lies on the development of small molecule drugs for severe diseases by targeting GPCR’s, a class of membrane proteins with massive druggable potential. Unique is that the company’s technology allows for the research of inherently unstable GPCR’s, which previously could not be investigated. To secure their future growth and success, they are looking for a Research Associate to support the Molecular Engineering group.

As Research Associate Molecular Engineering, you will join the antibody engineering group, which is essential in the company’s approach on discovery research. Under the guidance of a Senior Scientist, you will use a multitude of techniques in the development and generation of specific nanobodies. These antibodies will later-on be used in the research of the Structural Biology group and therefore you will also have close interactions with them. Contrary to other companies, here you will not be limited to the purely operational part of the engineering. Confo Therapeutics encourages being proactive and thinking outside the box, thus valuing your input and creativity. In combination with the continuous improvement of the internal Technology platform, you can expect to keep developing yourself and broaden your skill set.

  • Design and execute innovative cloning strategies of single genes (GPCRs and VHHs) for optimal expression
  • Design and clone combinatorial antibody (VHH) libraries for multiple downstream applications
  • Establish SOPs and train stakeholders accordingly
  • Assist in managing the construct inventory in CLC Main Workbench and align with the LIMS
  • Assist in the implementation and management of the VHH sequence repository
  • Proactively scout and troubleshoot cross-department molecular engineering problems

To be successful in this position, you will bring the following skills:

  • Bachelor or Master in biotechnology or equivalent
  • 1+ year of bench oriented work experience in an industrial setting
  • Experience with the rational design and execution of cloning strategies of single genes and antibody repertoires (restriction-based cloning, Gateway cloning, In-Fusion, Gibson assembly or similars)
  • Experience with combinatorial antibody or VHH repertoire cloning
  • Familiar with sequence analysis software (CLC Main Workbench, Workflow Manager or equivalent)
  • Scientific integrity and precision in your work
  • Innovative mindset where you think along, instead of following pre-set protocols

The company offers you a dynamic and innovative environment, where you will help in the development of next generation technologies. In this role, you will be able to think along and quickly learn a broad range of techniques, as you will work outside the standard and established assays. Being a matrix organisation, you will be closely interacting with all disciplines in the company, such as with Antibody Scientists, Structural Biologists and Discovery Scientists (Biologists and Chemists). The gross yearly salary in this role will start at 40.000 euros, supplemented with extra benefits.
