Senior Data Scientist - Maastricht


For a large innovative, multinational in Maastricht, we are currently looking for a Senior Data Scientist for their material science business. The organisation is a divided into four businesses, which all have different business units. Among those four businesses, they are active in chemicals, food, biotechnology, medical devices and pharma. In this role as a Senior Data Scientist, you work in a dynamic research environment while staying close to the material science business. You will be active between research & development and the business where you will solve short and long-term problems by applying a groundbreaking approach for translating data into useful data for the business. Also will you be responsible for the initiation and supervising of several research projects with the goal to bring the latest multidisciplinary insights together to resolve existing industrial topics and play into future challenges to come. To accomplish this goal a few of your core responsibilities are:

  • Determining a scientific work plan, searching for applicable scientific input and perform R&D activities as stated in the project plan
  • Contributing to data science projects by defining an integrated scientific work plan, searching the right scientific input and executing R&D activities as defined in the project plan and spot bottlenecks
  • Taking the lead in the competence development projects and create new expertise, concepts and scientific innovations


  • In the possession of a Master or PhD degree in engineering sciences, computer science, data science, data analytics, statistics or in a comparable field with a strong quantitative focus
  • Previous experience in multiple projects using several data science techniques on relational databases, graph databases and structured and unstructured data sets, using machine learning and other methods and algorithms
  • Advanced user in Matlab, the programming language R or Python either through education or work experience
  • Ability to manage interdisciplinary projects and the stakeholders involved
  • Collaborate with other professionals from different backgrounds and in other departments and businesses
  • You bring a creative, agile and entrepreneurial way of working into the team and also feel comfortable in an ever changing and challenging and multidisciplinary environment
  • Through your broad interest you are able to present your scientific ideas to colleagues and partners of the business in as outside of the company effectively
  • Pro-actively search for new ideas, understand problems presented by the business and implementing workable solutions
