For Confo Therapeutics, a young and innovative drug discovery company, we are looking for a (Senior) Scientist Structural Biology. Their novel approach to drug discovery is internationally recognised and is both quicker and more performant than standard approaches. Their focus lies on the development of small molecule drugs for severe diseases by targeting GPCR’s, a class of membrane proteins with massive druggable potential. Unique is that the company’s technology allows for the research of inherently unstable GPCR’s, which previously could not be investigated. To support the growth of their biophysical activities, they are thus looking to strengthen the group with a (Senior) Scientist.

Function

You will join the Structural Biology group, which is key to the success of the organisation and consists of specialists in the GPCR field. The company has heavily invested in this group and therefore you will be able to use all state-of-the-art technologies, including cryo-em. As (Senior) Scientist, you will set-up your own projects in the broader company strategy and guide one or two Research Associates. You will be able to quickly develop yourself in a fast-growing group and under the guidance of a Manager with extensive academic and industry experience.

With your expertise in the field, you will quickly bring value to the current programs. You will not only be working as a Structural Biologist, you will also be Project Member in broader drug discovery programs and have the opportunity to work as a Project Leader yourself. Thus you will see the whole drug discovery process inside the company from a to z!

  • Cloning of membrane protein plasmid constructs and expression in insect and mammalian cells
  • Characterisation of expression levels in membrane and in solubilised form
  • Construct engineering to optimise expression and/or protein stability
  • Characterisation of protein stability in solubilised form
  • Biophysical, X-ray and EM experiments
  • Coaching of Research Associates
  • Core member of project teams
  • Project leader role in drug discovery projects

Requirements

In this position, you bring the following skills-set/experience:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in a related field
  • More than three years of experience as post-doc or in a company
  • Purification, sample preparation, design and implementation of crystallisation trials
  • Crystal optimisation techniques for membrane proteins
  • Sample preparation and optimisation for cryo-EM studies
  • Data collection and interpretation of both X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM co-structure data
  • Highly collaborative, self-motivated, dynamic and team-oriented individual

Bringing protein biophysical characterisation (thermostability, (F-)SEC and/or IR,) and screening (SPR and/or thermal shift) is a plus.
