Our client is a leading organisation in the field of discovery and development of innovative therapeutics based on the human microbiome. Using their own patented technology they have a strong candidate for Inflammatory Bowel Disease as their most advanced program. Currently, they are looking for a Team Leader Microbiology Discovery to lead the Microbiology Discovery Team and bring the right strategies and methods for the isolation and characterisation of bacterial strains as well as for the creation of bacterial consortia for the portfolio projects. All to ultimately, develop breakthrough microbial strategies for the treatment of conditions associated to impaired intestinal health.

This is how you will make the difference

As Team Leader Microbiology Discovery you will develop relevant approaches for bacterial isolation and characterisation of bacterial strains based on project needs. This includes maintaining and growing the bacterial culture collection. You will develop specific methods to detect strains when present in a consortia (e.g. qPCR). Also you will propose and implement strategies and methods for ensuring good understanding of bacterial functionalities and characteristics, this includes analytical method development (e.g. GC, HPLC), enzymatic assays and other appropriate assays. Another responsibility is ensuring that all databases (such as culture collection) are well curated and quality data is delivered, connected to this you will develop strategies to clearly and concisely share know-how across the teams. Additionally, you will develop the required assays for measuring bacterial functionalities internally or identify and manage external providers. Together with your team members, you will propose relevant bacterial strains and consortia for the projects, evaluate the hypothesis and present the data in a clear manner towards the project team. Continuously, you will incorporate functional strain know-how together with bacterial ecological concepts to build consortia. On a daily basis you will manage a team of scientists in their work and planning for timely delivery of quality assays & data and you will write or support project proposals as required. You will work across interdisciplinary teams and parallel projects in the design and development of microbial therapeutics, in close connection with bio-informatics, in vitro pharmacology, and process technology required for fluidity in projects. It will be your responsibility to present proposals, data and interpretation to project teams and management, and creating a team environment supporting growth and development of your team members

  • Up to date with new methods in microbiology and are knowledgeable on methods to assess bacterial functionalities;
  • Familiarity with ‘omics strategies’ (especially but not exclusively culturomics) for the isolation and characterisation of bacteria;
  • Knowledgeable in the field of microbial metabolism and cross-feeding interactions in complex microbial ecosystems; preferably the colonic microbiota;
  • Experience in a drug discovery setting is a plus;
  • Team player with experience working in multi-disciplinary teams in a matrix organisation;
  • Experience in managing other scientists and paying attention to the personal development of team members;
